I was wondering what other teachers do about long nails. I had a student come to her lessons with long nails yesterday. She really didn’t understand why she couldn’t play the piano with long nails. We spent the lesson doing theory. (She had enough difficulty writing with a pencil). How do you address this problem?
I struggled with this with teenagers all the time. My suggestion is play a scale with the flats of your fingers and then with the tips so your student can see the difference in control. You just cant do that with nails . Stand firm as a teacher you deserve to teach the best you can with long nails you are limited. I had a teacher that made you clip your nails in the lesson. I would discuss how badly she wants to play and that the only way you can teach her if the nails come off.
